Does anyone know where to get good, organic meat and poultry in Cork city? I've heard that the 'Chicken Hotel(!?)' in the English Market imports it's Chicken from Thailand and that it's all full of hormones and yack. I've bought my chicken there for years so feel quite ill now!
There's one butchers in the English Market who claims to sell organic meat but it isn't. Maybe I should just turn vegetarian, it's awful not knowing what's in your food

Organic Meat and Poultry?

Good question, I'm not sure to be honest, I would have thought the English market was the place ... seemingly not!
Good question and I agree with you. Its very hard. If a chicken does not cost about €16.00 then its not free range as I would know it.
It is possible to buy good meat. Robbie Fitzsimmons in East Ferry is doing super chickens and you can get them in Cliffords Butchers in Castlemartyr. They will freeze perfectly so buy a few. They're about €16 each.
For bacon/pork I get everything from Gubeen in West Cork. If you go to Thursdays Mahon Point market, Fingal Fergussan will be there selling his little piggies - and they are amazing.
I think Irish lamb is excellent and this is down to your butcher.
Again, same with beef. Tom Durcan in the English market sells excellent beef. If you do want organic beef then you can mail order from Omega Beef. They are in Tipperary and have an excellent reputation. I haven't tried any yet, but it does come highly recommended.
Hope that helps.

You can also get lovely lamb from lambdirect.ie
It's lamb from the West of Ireland and you can get whole or half lambs which is fully traceable to the farm is came from and you can even order a mountain heather lamb.
Wow, thank you! Unfortunately, I'm a city based, non driving student who is in college 9am-8pm every day, so none of those options would be practical for me. There is definitely a niche in the market here!
Oh
( - ok - well what about O'Flynns in Cork - I never know which street they are on but its wither Cook St, Marlborough St or Princess St- think its Princess St.
There must be one somewhere selling proper Irish chickens. Do you know what you do. Go up to Kay O'Connell in the Farmgate restaurant at the top of the English market and ask her. She'll put you in the right direction.
Hope you find a nice birdie.

I LOVE O' Flynn's, we go there all the time! The Sweet Italian are my favourite, and the Honey and Mustard are fantastic too. Can't wait to check out their new shop
Just a quick note. i believe the butcher who was claiming to sell organic meat but in actual fact was not has gone from the English Market. Also if you can make it to Mahon Point on a thursday Dan Ahern is there selling organic poultry and meat and our local Ballycotton free range chickens are also on sale. It is worth the bus trip.
