Wheatgrass

Did you know that cows fed fresh grass rather then dry grass during the winter gave milk with a much higher nutrient content?  This may be because young grass shoots (wheatgrass) are one of the most nutritious foods you can eat.  Wheat and Barleygrass provide greater benefits than all other land vegetables - 22 vitamins, all 8 essential amino acids, phytonutrients and chlorophyll.

When people think of protein they think of meat, meat and more meat.  In fact, fresh leafy greens contain a very surprising amount of protein.  The protein content of wheatgrass is 1st class, that is, it contains all essential amino acids needed daily, just like meat.  Also, wheat grass is considered more health-giving than other grasses (such as oats, barley, rye and spelt) because of its high chlorophyll content.  Chlorophyll is formed in plants in the presence of sunlight by a process called photosynthesis which enables the plant to turn minerals from the earth into a form which can be utilised by animals and humans.

People have traditionally used wheatgrass for greater energy, blood purifying, internal cleansing and relief from inflammation like arthritis.  It is ideal in a situation where one has an inability to take in solid foods.  This is because it can be juiced, thereby making the nutrients much more bio-available for the body to use.  Otherwise several large platefuls of greens would have to be eaten to obtain the same quantities of vitamins and minerals.  But the following is a list where chlorophyll (in wheatgrass or other ‘green’ foods) can benefit the body…. for building and regenerating cells, as a protective and preventative agent (especially from chemical carcinogens), as a vitamin, mineral and digestive supplement or as a digestive aid, for pain relief, cleansing the blood, purifying the system, to help regulate weight, as a douche for vaginal infection, as a skin and scalp treatment, as an antiseptic for infected wounds, ulcers and burns, as a mouth wash, as a eye lotion and nasal decongestant, and when used in a long term programme it removes toxic drugs and heavy metals from the system.  That’s quite a lot of benefits!

Wheatgrass can be bought in powder, capsule or tablet from at most good health food stores; it is also available in many juice bars as an additional option with your drink.  Or, if you are really ‘going for gold’ you can sprout wheat grains and then plant them in trays, harvesting the young crop at about 8-10 days after they were sown, and then home-juice them!  You’ll feel great for it I can assure you!
